Source - http://canadaonline.about.com/od/health/a/swineflu.htm About Swine Flu Swine flu is a Type A influenza virus which causes regular outbreaks of flu in pigs, but is rarely fatal. In the past. swine flu has not normally affected humans, although there have been a few cases reported in people with direct exposure to pigs or in those who have been near pigs. From December 2005 to February 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 12 cases of human infection with swine flu. In late April 2009, the outbreak of more than a thousand cases of swine flu in humans in Mexico, and a suspected 86 deaths, as well as another 11 cases confirmed in the United States, led the World Health Organization to say that the outbreak has "pandemic potential" and to urge all countries to increase their reporting and surveillance of influenza and to be on high alert for any unusual patterns. Incompetent Manager ( 10 ways to know )

1. Bias against action : There are always plenty of reasons not to take a decision, reasons to wait for more information, more options, more opinions. But real leaders display a consistent bias for action. People who don’t make mistakes generally don’t make anything. Legendary ad man David Ogilvy argued that a good decision today is worth far more than a perfect decision next month. Beware prevaricators. 2. Secrecy : “We can’t tell the staff,” is something I hear managers say repeatedly. They defend this position with the argument that staff will be distracted, confused or simply unable to comprehend what is happening in the business. If you treat employees like children, they will behave that way — which means trouble. If you treat them like adults, they may just respond likewise. Very few matters in business must remain confidential and good managers can identify those easily. The lover of secrecy has trouble being honest and is afraid of letting peers have the information

20 ways to say "NO

Here are 20 ways to say "NO" without hurting others "I CAN'T RIGHT NOW, BUT I CAN DO IT LATER" "I'M REALLY NOT THE MOST QUALIFIED PERSON FOR THE JOB" "I JUST DON'T HAVE ANY ROOM IN MY CALENDAR RIGHT NOW" "I CAN'T, BUT LET ME GIVE YOU THE NAME OF SOMEONE WHO CAN" "I HAVE ANOTHER COMMITMENT" "I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF SEVERAL PROJECTS AND CAN'T SPARE THE TIME" "I'VE HAD A FEW THINGS COME UP AND I NEED TO DEAL WITH THOSE FIRST" "I WOULD RATHER DECLINE THAN END UP DOING A MEDIOCRE JOB" "I'M REALLY FOCUSING MORE ON MY PERSONAL AND FAMILY LIFE RIGHT NOW" "I'M REALLY FOCUSING MORE ON MY CAREER RIGHT NOW" "I REALLY DON'T ENJOY THAT KIND OF WORK" "I CAN'T, BUT I'M HAPPY TO HELP OUT WITH ANOTHER TASK" "I'VE LEARNED IN THE PAST THAT THIS REALLY ISN'T MY STRONG SUIT" "I'M

Managers

Depending on the news you hear, it may seem like this economy is still going downhill, or perhaps the bottom has finally been reached. But either way, there’s no doubt that more organizations are going to fail before we’re truly moving continually forward again. However, while many organizations struggle, there are still great success stories out there. Leaders who see opportunities where others see roadblocks generally lead those operations. Not coincidently, their teams are usually both more positive and more productive then competitors.’ Over my 30+ years working with business leaders and professionals, I’ve been able to see which ideas will work in almost any arena. Here are 10 tactics I’ve garnered from some of the finest pro’s I’ve worked with. See if any of them could help you improve your rate of success: 1. Become a small picture kind of boss - While it’s critical that you help everyone understand the overall goals and objectives of the organization; don’t forget that

Resignation Letter of Systems Admin - Funny

Mr. Baker, As an employee of an institution of higher education, I have a few very basic expectations. Chief among these is that my direct superior shares an intellect that ranges above the common ground squirrel. After your consistent and annoying harassment of myself, and my co-workers during the commission of our duties, I can only surmise that you are one of the few true genetic wastes of our time. Asking me, a network administrator, to explain every little nuance of everything I do each time you happen to stroll into my office is not only a waste of time, but also a waste of precious oxygen. I was hired because I know about Unix, and you were apparently hired to provide amusement to myself and other employees, who watch you vainly attempt to understand the concept of “cut and paste” for the hundredth time. You will never understand computers. Something as incredibly simple as binary still gives you too many options. You will also never understand why people hate you, but

Types of Management

Don’t know who the auther is ?? but good Twenty New Management Styles   1) MANAGING BY WALKING FASTER THEN THE EMPLOYEES These kind of managers you will always see in the corridor, ten steps away. "We'll have to talk" you can hear them say, just as they have disappeared around the corner. 2) MANAGING BY STARING OUT OF THE WINDOW These managers you usually meet with their backside faced to you with their hands in their pockets. When you talk to them, their thoughts keep staring out  of the windows. 3) MANAGING BY POST-IT'S Some managers forget everything. They want to impress you with their 'busy'ness by continuously writing on Post-it's while you are talking. 4) MANAGING BY DELEGATION TO THE SECRETARY These managers just delegate everything to the secretary. If He is good, He knows what she must do. 5) MANAGING BY KNOWING NOTHING These managers don't really know anything at all. They let YOU give answers. Meanwhile they fill the ti

The unbeaten IT manager

THOUGH many participants take the race of running IT companies, only a few emerge as winners. Some common characteristics make these winners stand out. Certain managers would, possibly, have more of these characteristics. Nevertheless, a number of universal characteristics are basic for them to come forth as champions. Following which, a manager could map his/her road to success. The most common universally found characteristics can be narrowed down to: - Estimating requirements All IT managers need the knack to estimate the company's requirements associated to their tasks. Finding out the genuine requirements and concerns help in dealing with issues efficiently. Dwelling on improper issues creates fiscal problems. Building a vision To be ahead of everybody you have to recognise your objective and build a vision for your team. This helps the team members reach the goal you have set for them. Besides, it makes the team to stay focused. Generating the plan Now, to get

IMAP vs. POP3?

IMAP vs. POP3? What is IMAP? Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local computer. IMAP is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you on the servers. You (by using your e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger or Eudora) can view just the header information, which includes the sender and subject of the letter, allowing you to decide whether to download the message or not. You can also create and manipulate folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, or search for certain parts or an entire note. What is POP3? Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) is also a standard protocol for receiving e-mail and is also a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you on the servers. With POP3, your mail is saved in a mailbox on the remote server until you check your mail. When you check your mail, all of the mail is immediately downloaded to your computer and is no long

Five mistakes managers make most often

Some management mistakes are so common that you can actually compile them into a list. If you’re a manager struggling to find out why your team is dysfunctional, take a look at the behaviors in this list and see if any look familiar. 1.      Not communicating with the team . I know, I know, you’ve seen the advice for communicating so often you want to smack someone. I want to smack myself for saying it so often. But you know what? Unless you’re on the front line heading into a military battle, you have to take time to communicate with your team members. You don’t have to pass on every shred of information you’ve gotten from upper management on a new initiative, but you have to give them enough information to know why they’re being asked to do what they’re being asked to do. The more information your team members have, the more ownership they’ll feel in the process, and the better they’ll perform. 2.      Continually focusing on the negative . Thinking in negative terms is a comm

Truth of HR

One day while walking down the street a highly successful Human Resources Manager was tragically hit by a bus and she died. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter himself.. "Welcome to Heaven," said St. Peter. "Before you get settled in though, it seems we have a problem. You see, strangely enough, we've never once had a Human Resources Manager make it this far and we're not really sure what to do with you." "No problem, just let me in," said the woman. "Well, I'd like to, but I have higher orders. What we're going to do is let you have a day in Hell and a day in Heaven and then you can choose whichever one you want to spend an eternity in." "Actually, I think I've made up my mind, I prefer to stay in Heaven", said the woman "Sorry, we have rules..." And with that St. Peter put the executive in

5 Reasons You should look for Change

·          You can’t face your staff anymore and hand down directives from on high. I’ve faced this one personally, and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back and made me step up my search for a new job. Simply put, I was working for a relatively oppressive organization that, almost literally, felt that the only way to motivate employees was to continually tell them that they weren’t doing enough and that more was required of them. Employees were evaluated by the entire senior management team and the hint of a negative interaction — regardless of fault — could doom the employee even if everything else was absolutely perfect. Didn’t sing loudly enough at an event? You got called on the carpet. I wish I was kidding. My staff at this place was absolutely fantastic. They were hard-working, conscientious people and I couldn’t keep telling them that they weren’t doing enough. So, I stopped doing it and found a new job where the organizations treats people like adults. ·          N

Ten Abilities of IT Manager

From needs assessment to team building, these are the skills you need to be at the top of your game.   I’ve been an IT manager and CIO for more than 20 years and have been involved in the technology profession for over 30 years. In that time, I’ve seen many good IT managers and a few excellent ones. I’ve also seen a fair share of poor managers. I believe there are 11 traits that must become the core competencies of any IT manager who wants to have a successful IT management career. While some may argue that there are more, or other, skills that are just as important, I believe from my years of experience that these are the most crucial traits managers need today.
